Show your linen some love

It’s our favourite time of year here at Whitney Linen — Spring! Time to finally put that parka away for good and pull our linen jackets, shirts and blazers out of the closet. If you’ve never bought linen before, you might be one of those people who’s always been worried linen was a high maintenance material. Not so! In fact, linen can be easier to clean and prep than any other item in your closet, and the more you wear it, the better it looks. Trust us!

Plus, better than those pesky synthetic fabrics you’ll often find in shirts, jackets and pants, linen is natural and breathable. Seriously—nothing cools the skin like linen, which is precisely why it’s been used for centuries in sweltering climates.

Here are a few handy pointers for taking good care of your linen so that it loves you back and lasts a lifetime!

  • Wash your linen basics at home. The more linen is washed, the softer and more absorbent it becomes.
  • When washing linen basics, you can hand-wash or machine wash—it’s totally up to you! Just use cool water, a gentle cycle, and gentle, bleach-free detergent.
  • Tumble dry or line-dry linen items but remove them while they’re still slightly damp to retain texture. Don’t wring or squeeze the fabric, just let it do its thing and fall back into shape.
  • Dry clean structured linen pieces like jackets and blazers to retain fit. When in doubt, check the garment’s label.
  • If you prefer a really wrinkle-free garment, go ahead and get out the iron, but only iron pieces while they’re still slightly damp.
